Pirates hijack palm oil tanker off Somalia

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--A Malaysian-owned tanker with 39 crew on board and laden with palm oil has been hijacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden, between Somalia and Yemen, MISC shipping company said on Wednesday.

  

The MISC tanker, the MT Bunga Melati Dua, of 32,025 dead weight tonnes (DWT) was heading towards Rotterdam from Dumai, Sumatra, the company said.

 

The incident occurred around 14:00 GMT on Tuesday and all authorities had been notified accordingly, MISC said.

 

“We cannot provide any information to what kind of cargo has been lost in this incident. But it was palm oil and derivative products,” said Fiona Clare Pereira, general manager of the corporate affairs department at MISC.

 

This is the latest in a wave of attacks in the region.
