SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--European trading house Trafigura said that the fire at two of its tanks in a Malaysian port – containing 8,000 cubic metres of naphtha and 17,000 cubic metres of gasoline respectively – was put out on Wednesday.
A company spokeswoman confirmed late on Wednesday that approximately 8,000 cubic metres of naphtha was lost to the fire.
The gasoline and naphtha products lost were for customers in the region and Trafigura was currently in discussions with them in regards to lost of product, she added.
In a statement, Trafigura said it will “wait for [the] completion of a full assessment of the material remaining,” explaining that it “will be compared to the status prior to the fire, before assigning a value to the loss.”
The fire began at around 6.45pm (local time) on Aug 17 at a storage tank containing 17,000 cubic metres of gasoline and subsequently spread to an adjacent tank containing 80,000 cubic metres naphtha at around 7pm the following day.
Trafigura which leased the tanks at the oil depot in Tanjung Langsat Port (TLP) were informed on Sunday night that one of the eight tanks containing the gasoline caught fire.
Port officials informed Trafigura later on Monday evening, that a second tank of naphtha caught fire. TLP told Trafigura that the cause of the fire was unknown and investigations will be commencing shortly.
