Malaysia's MISC loses 2nd tanker to pirates

SINGAPORE (ICIS news) – Malaysia’s MISC said over the weekend that another one of its tankers - Bunga Melati 5, which carried 30,000 tonnes of petrochemicals - was hijacked by unknown pirates off the coast of Yemen in the Middle East.

This is the second hijacking incident of an MISC tanker after Somali pirates took the MT Bunga Melati Dua last month.

Bunga Melati 5 was said to be travelling towards Singapore from Yanbu, Saudi Arabia when it was hijacked on Friday.

“The ship [had] 36 Malaysian crew and 5 Filipino temporary maintenance crew,” MISC said in a statement.

“All authorities have been notified accordingly and we are working closely to render the necessary assistance and support needed,” it added.

The attack on the tanker Bunga Melati 5 closely followed a hijacking of a Japanese tanker  loaded with 10,000 tonnes of flammable products by Somali pirates on Thursday.
