HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Hanna became the fourth Atlantic hurricane this season on Monday as it neared the Bahamas, US forecasters said.

Hanna had maximum sustained winds of 75 miles/hour (120 km/hour) at it moved west/northwest near Mayaguana Island in the southeast Bahamas, the National Hurricane Center said.

A forecast track showed that Hanna could hit the US east coast at South Carolina - far from the concentration of energy and chemical production in the US Gulf - by the end of the week.

Hanna comes on the heels of Hurricane Gustav, which struck the US Gulf coast on Monday.
