SINGAPORE (ICIS news) – Malaysia’s MISC has stopped all its vessels from entering the Gulf of Aden with immediate effect in light of two of their tankers being hijacked by pirates, MISC said in a statement on Tuesday.
The hijacking of Bunga Melati 5 was despite having precautionary and preventive measures in place when it was overcome by pirates.
In the statement, MISC’s said the temporary stoppage will last until they have additional security measures in place to enhance safety of their vessels and crew.
“For the safety and security of all our crew members, I cannot comment on any further information,” Fiona Clare Pereira, general manager of corporate affairs, said when asked to confirm market rumours of receiving a $10m (€0.68m) ransom demand from the pirates.
