Yuzhny August ammonia exports rise 25,000 tonnes

LONDON (ICIS news)--Ammonia shipments from Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Yuzhny totalled 280,962 tonnes in August, up around 25,000 tonnes from July on slightly improved availability, customs data showed on Friday.

 

Shipments of Russian ammonia totalled 184,345 tonnes, down from 199,865 tonnes in July, shipments of ammonia from Ukrainian producers reached 96,616 tonnes, up from 56,100 tonnes in July.

 

Gorlovka restarted one of its units, which had been down since mid-June, in early August.

 

However, export availability is still reduced due to a 40-day turnaround at one of Odessa Port Plant (OPZ) units, which started in mid-July. Other producers, including Russia’s Rossosh, are also reported to have been down during August.

 

Of interest during August was a shipment of 34,652 tonnes to South Korea. This unusual trade flow is due to the closure of the Burrup ammonia plant in Australia, which has forced traders to source product elsewhere for customers in Asia.

 

Another unusual shipment was 23,510 tonnes to Jordan. Jordan is usually supplied by the Middle East, but these tonnes were shipped by trader Mitsui to repay a swap with Qatar Fertilizer Co (Qafco).

 

The US was once again the main destination for Yuzhny ammonia in August with 149,696 tonnes, according to the data.

 

Other export destinations last month were Turkey (56,769 tonnes), Israel (9,799 tonnes) and Italy (6,533 tonnes).

 

Yuzhny is a major trading port in the Black Sea, while the Ukraine and Russia are major ammonia trade sources in the world owing to large natural gas reserves.
