NEW DELHI (ICIS news) –India’s Essar Gujarat Petrochemicals Limited (EGPL) Oil Limited (EOL) would set up a combined methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE)/ ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE) operation in technical collaboration with Lummus Technologies of the US a government official said on Friday.

The official said the government has approved the technology tie-up that also envisaged the establishment of a butane-1 recovery unit (BRU) and a selective hydrogenation unit (SHU). The three units would form part of EGPL’s mega petrochemical complex to be commissioned by April 2012 at Vadinar in Jamnagar district of Gujarat State.

The combined unit would have capacity to produce 89,500 tonnes/year of MTBE and 105,000 tonnes/year of ETBE. The BRU capacity would be 30,700 tonnes/year.

The SHU with C-4 raffinate feed capacity of 123,000 tonnes/year would be based on BASF SELOP process offered by Lummus.

The official said the government had also approved a separate technical collaboration between EOL and Lummus for setting up 128,600 tonnes/year of butadiene extraction unit at the complex. The unit would incorporate BASF butadiene extraction process.

The government has cleared another two EOL-Lummus technical tie-ups for setting up naphtha cracker and a phenol plant at the complex.
