HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The Port of Houston will close on Friday due to the threat of Hurricane Ike, the port said on Wednesday.

In a statement on its website, the Port Authority urged employees and tenants to prepare for a "possible weather event".

The Port Authority said it expected to be open on Monday, 15 September, at 07:00 Houston time (12:00 GMT) and that employees were expected at work at their regularly scheduled time.

Hurricane Ike could make landfall near Port Lavaca, Texas, which is roughly 135 miles (217km) from Houston, according to the National Hurricane Center.

At 13:00 hours Houston time (18:00 GMT), Ike's eye was about 395 miles (636 km)  south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi river and moving northwest at 8 miles/hour, the US National Hurricane Center said.

Ike had sustained winds of 100 miles/hour, according to the centre.
