HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Brazilian ethanol exports in April-August rose by nearly 60% to 2.4bn litres (634m gal) from a year earlier, and the US was the main destination for the product, ethanol industry association Unica said on Thursday.
Unica said the US received 68% of the ethanol shipped from centre-south mills between April and August. Europe was the second-largest destination with 22%, the association said.
Brazil paid duty on 54% of the ethanol sold to the US, as those cargoes were shipped directly to the US and incurred a 54 cent/gal tariff. The remaining 46% was shipped tax-free through Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI) countries, the association said.
Brazil’s Unica released figures starting in April, as that is the month when the sugarcane harvest begins in the centre-south of Brazil.
The centre-south accounts for about 85% of Brazil’s ethanol production. Mills in that area run between April and December.
Brazil also produces ethanol in the northeast, but plants in that region operate from September to March.
