MUMBAI (ICIS news)--India’s Sterling Auxiliaries plans to debottleneck its ethanolamines plant in Dahej to raise its capacity to 50,000 tonnes/year from 30,000 tonnes/year due to increased surfactants demand, a senior company official said on Thursday.

The new capacity is scheduled to go on stream in early 2009, said Sterling adviser Vishal Goenka on the sidelines of the two-day ICIS Fine & Specialty Chemicals conference.

“Present market conditions provide the company with an ideal opportunity to make incremental capacity expansions feasible, and the Indian industry looks robust in the long term,” he added.

“Demand for ethanolamines in India is growing at about 10% a year, and the growth is much faster at 15-20% in the Middle East, where the chemical is mostly used in gas scrubbing,” Goenka said.
