TOKYO (ICIS news)--Japan’s total shipments of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin decreased 22% to 37,943 tonnes in August compared with the previous month, reflecting lower demand in all major applications, industry figures showed on Friday.

Of the total, 22,454 tonnes were shipped within Japan, a 27% decrease month on month and a 9% decline from the same time a year before, the ABS Resin Association said.

Exports of the resin in August declined 13% to 15,489 tonnes from July and down 3% from August 2007, it added.

Domestic shipments of ABS resin in August decreased both month on month and year on year for all primary applications including automotive, electronic appliances, automation equipment and construction of houses, according to the association.

Among the domestic shipments’ total, 6,325 tonnes were used for automotive applications, down 26% from the previous month and a 9% decrease from the year-ago period, the association said.

For electronic appliances, shipments decreased 10% month on month and 2% year on year to 3,935 tonnes, while 3,134 tonnes of ABS resin were used for automation equipment, down 1% month on month and 12% year on year, the association added.
