HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US refiner Valero said on Wednesday that its 245,000 bbl/day Texas City refinery has restarted and all main production units were up and operating, following a shutdown ahead of Hurricane Ike.
The refinery was operating at reduced rates but was “moving toward normal rates”, spokesman Bill Day said.
The San Antonio-based refiner’s 325,000 bbl/day Port Arthur refinery in Texas has not restarted, Day said.
Day said that the Port Arthur refinery was “working on securing adequate supplies of fresh water before its restart process can commence”.
The company’s 130,000 bbl/day Houston refinery was continuing its restart process.
Hurricane Ike and its predecessor Gustav caused the shutdowns at 14 Gulf coast refineries.
According to the US Department of Energy (DOE), six refineries remain shut down as of 23 September in the Port Arthur and Houston areas, with a total operable capacity of 1.7m bbl/day.
