MONTE CARLO (ICIS news)--Significant growth opportunities exist for specialty chemicals companies serving end-use markets in water treatment, food preservation and pharmaceuticals, said a senior official from Germany-based Brenntag, late on Sunday.

Rising living standards and more stringent regulatory requirements meant demand would increase steadily in mature markets, and more significantly in developing economies said Steve Holland, CEO of Brenntag Europe, on the sidelines of the European Petrochemicals Association (EPCA).

"It's completely driven by regulation so is impervious to the demands of the market as central and eastern Europe come into line with EU standards,” said Holland adding that the adherence to EU standards would boost demand for water treatment.

Food preservation was another growth area Holland said, adding that there was a rise in meat consumption and other protein-rich foods in mature economies

"Protein-based products tend to require more products to aid food processing," he added.

Holland said higher standards of living led to a rise in spending on "personal well being", which in turn would boost sales of pharmaceuticals.
