MOSCOW (ICIS news)--Azerbaijan has recorded a substantial increase in its production of polyethylene (PE) in the January-August period, up 53% year on year to 37,800 tonnes, the country’s statistical agency said on Monday.

In the first eight months of the year, Azerbaijan also saw propylene output rise 47% to 20,900 tonnes and the country produced 15,300 tonnes of liquid caustic soda, up 68%, the agency said, without disclosing reasons for the rise.

Earlier this month, Azerbaijan state-run petrochemical holding Azerikimya indicated tentative plans to build new chemical plants in Sumgait.

These were slated to producer 800,000 tonnes/year of urea, 700,000 tonnes/year of low density PE (LDPE) and high density PE (HDPE) and 130,000 tonnes/year of polypropylene PP.
