MONTE CARLO (ICIS news)--BASF’s ethylene oxide (EO)/mono ethylene glycol (MEG) Ludwigshafen plant in Germany returned to full production following planned maintenance, a company source said on Monday.

The plant, which has a capacity of 295,000 tonnes/year of EO and 25,000 tonnes/year of MEG, was shut down at the end of August for a turnaround.

The EO market remained tight and spot volumes remained limited due to the recent and current maintenance schedule of several European suppliers, the source said on the sidelines of the European Petrochemical Association (EPCA) conference.

Shell completed its maintenance turnaround at its EO/MEG unit last week. The plant, which has a capacity of 305,000 tonnes/year of EO and 160,000 tonnes/year of MEG, was down for about 24 days.

Meanwhile, previous reports suggested that Dow Chemical’s MEG-to-EO conversion project at its Terneuzen site, the Netherlands; and Clariant’s 8-week maintenance schedule at its EO/MEG unit at Gendorf in Germany were underway.

Prior to the conversion project, Dow’s Terneuzen site has a rated capacity of 170,000 tonnes/year of MEG and 165,000 tonnes/year of EO, according to ICIS plants and projects.

Clariant produces 225,000 tonnes/year of EO and 140,000 tonnes/year of MEG.
