Japan's August chems output falls 1.5% from July

TOKYO (ICIS news)--Japan’s chemical output in August decreased at a seasonally adjusted rate of 1.5% compared with the previous month, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) statistics showed on Tuesday.

In actual production terms, ethylene output increased 1.3% to 606,118 tonnes in August from July, and was down 4.9% from the same period a year earlier, METI said.

Propylene production was up 2.6% month on month and down 4.4% year on year to 498,965 tonnes in August 2008, it added.

The ministry’s index of chemical industry output, excluding drugs, was at 96.5 in August, according to METI. The index is based on 100 for the average production in 2005.
