PRAGUE (ICIS news)--Poland's Ciech is to expand sodium carbonate capacity at Romanian subsidiary Uzinele Sodice Govora (USG), taking its output to more than 2m tonnes/year, it said on Wednesday.
Ciech, Europe's second largest sodium carbonate European producer, intended to increase USG's capacity to 1,500 tonnes/day (547,500 tonnes/year) by the end of 2009, said Ciech spokesman Krzysztof Grad.
The company, Poland's largest chemical group, has a sodium carbonate capacity across its subsidiaries of approximately 1.9m tonnes/year.
It has already increased USG's output from around 660 tonnes/day (240,000 tonnes/year) to 1,000 tonnes/day (365,000 tonnes/year) with an investment of €15m ($21m), added Grad.
This had been achieved since it acquired 93.1% of the company from the Romanian state in December 2006 for €9.2m and substantial debt clearing, debt restructuring and investment guarantees, said Grad.
The additional expansion would cost another €10m, he added.
Ciech's second place on the European sodium carbonate market places it behind Solvay with around 5.1m tonnes/year of capacity but ahead of UK-based Brunner Mond, which has about 1.3m tonnes/year of capacity.
Its position was strengthened late last year when it bought Germany's Sodawerk Stassfurt for €75m.
Sodawerk Stassfurt has a sodium carbonate capacity of 450,000 tonnes/year. Ciech generates around 20% of its turnover from sodium carbonate.
