HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Wellman is closing its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyester staple fibre production plant near Palmetto in South Carolina, a company spokesman said on Thursday.

The site is up for sale, said spokesman Michael Bermish, but it was not clear if any potential buyers have stepped forward.

The closure of the 260,000 tonne/year bottle-grade PET plant near Palmetto is part of Wellman’s plan to consolidate all PET operations at its Pearl River site in Mississippi, exit its polyester staple fibre and engineering resins business, and climb out of bankruptcy by the end of 2008.

The company previously announced that it found a buyer for its engineering resins business in Johnsonville, South Carolina. The Johnsonville site produces nylon compounds - the bulk of which is recycled nylon - mainly for under-the-hood automotive applications, Bermish said.
