LONDON (ICIS news)--Exports of sulphur from the Canadian port of Vancouver totalled 347,411 tonnes in September, up nearly 57,000 tonnes from the 290,487 tonnes exported in August, customs data showed on Wednesday.

However, shipments were down over 160,000 tonnes from the 510,872 tonnes exported in September 2007.

Exports have slowed over the past couple of months due to lacklustre demand, particularly from major market China.

Indeed, no shipments were made from Vancouver to China during September, compared with 120,000 tonnes in August. Some 250,000 tonnes of sulphur was shipped to China in September last year.

The top destination for Canadian sulphur was Brazil with 131,937 tonnes, up from 59,737 tonnes in August.

Canadian suppliers also shipped to Australia (86,629 tonnes), South Africa (72,069 tonnes), Cuba (29,073 tonnes), New Zealand (18,000 tonnes) and Chile (9,703 tonnes).

January-September 2008 exports from Vancouver totalled 3.69m tonnes, down from 3.98m tonnes in the first eight months of last year.

Meanwhile, year to date exports to main market China totalled 1.39m tonnes, compared with 2.21m tonnes in the same period of 2007.

Canada exported 5.2m tonnes of sulphur in the whole of 2007.
