HOUSTON (ICIS news)--PotashCorp’s 300,000 tonne/year potash plant in Patience Lake did not open as scheduled on 4 October because of the labour dispute that has plagued a company for two months, a company spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The plant was widely expected by industry observers to not open as scheduled unless a resolution had been reached between Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PotashCorp) and some 500 members of the United Steelworkers Union, who have been on strike since 7 August at three plants.

Company spokesperson Rhonda Speiss attributed the delay directly to the strike that has closed down a 800,000 tonne/year plant in Cory. Management workers from the three sites have been pooled together to operate a 2m tonne/year plant in Allan at half capacity.

All three facilities are located in Canada’s Saskatchewan province.
