SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Taiwan-based Chimei-Asahi plans to restart its 65,000 tonnes/year No. 1 polycarbonate (PC) unit in the next couple of days, a company source said late on Wednesday.

The unit, located at Jen Te, Tainan county, was taken offline in mid-July for an earlier-than-expected 40-45 day turnaround due to weak market conditions.

However, the restart date had to be pushed back because of some technical problems, said the source.

The company operates two units at the site which produce both optical grade and general purpose (GP) moulding PC.

The 75,000 tonne/year No. 2 unit was now running at normal rates, the source added.

Chimei-Asahi is a 90:10 joint venture of Taiwan's Chi Mei Corp and Japan's Asahi Kasei Chemicals.

Optical grade PC prices held steady on Wednesday at  $2,680-2,720/tonne  (€1,956.40-1,985.60/tonne) CIF (cost, insurance & freight) Hong Kong, while GP moulding PC prices fell $30/tonne to $2,750-2,800/tonne CIF Hong Kong on the back of poor demand and ample supply, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
