BASF completes Tarragona PP catalysts expansion

LONDON (ICIS news)--BASF has raised capacity for polypropylene catalysts at its Tarragona, Spain, site by 25% to meet growing global demand, the German chemicals major said on Thursday.

The debottlenecking project was completed on time in the third quarter 2008 and is already on line and in use to serve customers, said BASF in a statement.

It did not disclose current capacities at the plant or the investment cost.

The Tarragona plant produces custom catalysts for BASF’s partner Novolen Technology and the company’s own proprietary polyolefin catalysts.

“The global polyolefin catalysts market is expected to grow 4-5% per year through 2015,” said George Vann, BASF Polyolefin Catalysts global business manager.

“We expanded manufacturing capacity to keep pace with the market, meet our customers’ needs and leverage the value we bring to them,” he added.

The new capacity would help BASF better service customers in Europe and the Middle East, said BASF.

BASF’s Lynx polypropylene catalyst technologies are used commercially in all major polypropylene process technologies, including slurry, bulk loop, stirred gas, fluid gas, and stirred bulk.
