US stocks stay roughly flat in early trading

US stocks remain mostly flatHOUSTON (ICIS news)--The Dow Jones Industrial Average essentially traded flat on Thursday morning following six straight session losses.

The average fell by 85.38 points, or 0.92%, to reach 9,172.72 by 10:44 hours New York time (14:44 GMT).

Earlier on Thursday, the S&P 500 index rose by 9 points, or just short of 1%, to reach 994 points after briefly breaching the 1000-point mark for the first time in several days. The index’s chemical manufacturing component increased by nearly 4% from Wednesday’s close.

Shares of Huntsman rose by $2.90/share (€2.12/share), or 32%, to reach $12/share on news that its merger with Hexion Specialty Chemicals could proceed.

Shares of Dow Chemical gained 28 cents, or 1%, to settle at $28.01/share.
