HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US exports of acetic acid in August totalled 96,861 tonnes, up more than 123% from 43,357 tonnes during the same month last year, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Friday.
August exports were up 41% from 68,730 tonnes in July this year, the ITC said.
Singapore, Mexico, Spain, Brazil and Taiwan were the top five export destinations in August, accounting for a collective 85,217 tonnes - or 88% of total shipments.
From January through August, US acetic acid exports increased by more than 22% when compared with the same period in 2007, reflecting the soft domestic market and a sluggish US economy, according to market sources.
US Gulf coast export FOB (free on board) prices were $700-800/tonne (€511-584/tonne) over the past month, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
Major US acetic acid sellers include BP, Celanese and Eastman Chemical.
