SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (ICIS news)--US drivers are waiting longer to change their motor oil, a trend that will increase demand for higher-quality lubricants, a seller said on Tuesday.
“The demands on lubricants are making Group II or better base oils essential,” the seller said. “It is becoming increasingly difficult for Group I base oils to meet the new requirements.”
The Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association (ILMA) was conducting its annual meeting in Scottsdale.
Many original equipment manufacturers (OEM) now suggest that motorists wait 5,000-15,000 miles (8,000-24,000km) before changing their oil, the seller said. “That is only once a year for some drivers, meaning the oil needs to work harder and longer for the consumer.”
Already, General Motors (GM) and the California Environmental Protection Agency are encouraging motorists to drive longer before changing their oil. For years, drivers were recommended to change their motor oil every 3,000 miles.
In addition, General Motors (GM) automobiles equipped with the company's Oil Life System can be driven for at least 5,000 miles before needing an oil change, the company said. Depending on driving conditions, some automobiles with the system can be driven for 10,000 miles before needing an oil change.
Major Group II sellers in the US include ConocoPhillips, Motiva, Flint Hills Resources (FHR), Calumet Specialty Products, Valero and Chevron.
