SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Taiwan’s China Petrochemical Development Corporation (CPDC) will bring forward a 45-day planned maintenance shutdown at its 160,000 tonne/year acetic acid plant in Tasheh by one week due to persistent poor demand, a company official said on Wednesday.

“We will shut the plant on 21 October instead of 27 October”, the official said in Mandarin, adding that the turnaround would also be extended by another seven days due to the negative market outlook.

The plant is expected to restart mid-December.

“With all the acetic acid downstream markets experiencing weakness, sentiment during the EPCA (European Petrochemiccal Association) was generally very pessimistic," he said.

CPDC’s earlier-than-planned turnaround could be a sign of more plant shutdowns to come. Some producers in China were mulling operating rate cuts or shutting down their facilities due to persistent poor market conditions.

Major acetic acid producers in Asia include Celanese, BP, Jiangsu Sopo, Shanghai Wujing, Daicel Chemical Industries, Showa Denko and GNFC.
