SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Japan’s Asahi Kasei Corp has reduced operating rates at its 320,000 tonne/year No 2 styrene monomer (SM) unit in Mizushima to 75% on poor economics, a company source said on Wednesday.
“The reasons behind this move are poor margin, low demand and the dismal economic situation,” the source said.
The company’s 390,000 tonne/year No 3 SM unit at the same location was scheduled to undergo 20 days of maintenance and would be shut from 17 October to 14 November, the source added.
“Total production loss as a result of this shutdown is approximately 34,000 tonnes,” he said.
