SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--South Korea’s SK Energy plans to shut its 190,000 tonne/year No1 cracker in Ulsan at the end of October/early November due to poor economics, said a source close to the company on Thursday.

“It is not yet decided how long the cracker will be shut but it could be at least until the end of the year,” the source added.

The company’s No2 cracker, which has an ethylene capacity of 690,000 tonnes/year, will continue to run at 100%.

Cracker operators in Asia are mulling further production cuts or shutdowns due to deteriorating downstream market conditions.
