SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--Taiwan-based China Petrochemical Development Corp (CPDC) is planning to shut down its 180,000 tonne/year caprolactam plant in Kaohsiung on 27 October due to weak demand and huge inventory levels, a company source said on Wednesday.

"The plant will restart around mid-December," the source said in Mandarin, adding the plant was running at 60% operating rates.

The company’s other 90,000 tonne/year caprolactam facility in Toufen was shut down in early October. Its restart date would be delayed from mid-November to early next year.

Most caprolactam market players are sitting on the sidelines of the market, traders said.

"I expect the caprolactam market will tend to stabilise in the wake of the operating rates cut and shutdowns in the global market," a Taiwan trader said.

"However, the downstream demand recovery is still a key factor."
