SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--Shanghai SECCO Petrochemical has reduced the operating rates at its 500,000 tonne/year styrene monomer (SM) plant by 15% to 85% on weakness in the domestic market, said a company source on Tuesday.

Operating rates at the company's downstream 300,000 tonne/year polystyrene (PS) unit were also cut to around 60%.

"The limited profit we got forced us into cutting the operating rates," added the source.

Another major domestic producer, BASF-YPC, has also cut production levels at its 120,000 tonne/year SM plant to an undisclosed rate, said a company source.

Its downstream 50,000 tonne/year expandable polystyrene (EPS) unit was operating at 70% and 180,000 tonne/year PS unit at 50-60%, the source added.
