Japan soda ash output drops 6.6% in September

TOKYO (ICIS news)--Japan produced 360,537 tonnes of caustic soda in September, down 6.6% from the previous year, a local industry association said on Friday.

The country’s exports of caustic soda, however, increased 44.9% to 75,083 tonnes, the Japan Soda Industry Association added.

Domestic demand for caustic soda in September totaled 299,337 tonnes, a 5.6% decrease from the same time a year before, the association said.

Of the total, 173,682 tonnes were shipped for various use in the chemical industry, a 4% decline year on year, while 10,476 tonnes were used for non-iron metal production, up 12.9%, the association added.

Meanwhile, production of soda ash in September was 35,114 tonnes, a 1.2% rise from the year-ago period, while exports declined 65.2% to 40 tonnes, according to the association.
