SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Thailand’s largest olefins producer PTT Chemical has cut operating rates at one of its high density polyethylene (HDPE) plants at Mab Ta Phut to 70% due to weak demand, a company source said on Thursday.

The 250,000 tonne/year HDPE plant, operated by its wholly-owned subsidiary, Bangkok Polyethylene, had been running at the reduced rate since Monday, he said.

Another HDPE plant with the same capacity operated by PTT Chemical at the same site was running at 100% capacity, he added.

PTT Chemical’s 300,000 tonne/year ethane cracker at the same location was shut at the end of October for a debottlenecking that would raise its capacity by about 30%, he said, adding that the cracker was due to resume operations in end-December.
