Taekwang delays ACN restart on poor economics

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--South Korean acrylonitrile (ACN) producer Taekwang Industrial has delayed the restart of its 250,000 tonne/year plant in Ulsan due to weak market conditions, a company source said on Friday.

The unit was taken offline on 6 October for a 28-day turnaround but the restart was postponed due to persistent weak demand from downstream acrylic fibre (AF) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) sectors amid a slowing global economy.

The date when the plant will come back online has yet to be firmed up, said the source.

Taekwang was among several ACN producers including Asahi Kasei, Ineos Nitriles, China Petrochemical Development Corp (CPDC) and Tongsuh Petrochemical, which have either shut for maintenance or were operating at reduced rates in light of the poor market.
