TOKYO (ICIS news)--Japan’s DIC Corp posted a 51.6% decline in second-quarter net profits to yen (Y) 4.9bn ($50.2m) from Y10.1bn the previous year, partly due to weak sales in the graphic arts materials segment in the Americas and Europe, the Japanese chemical producer said on Friday.

Net sales in the three months ended 30 September decreased 6.5% to Y254bn, the company said.

The graphic arts materials segment recorded net sales of Y154.6bn, down 6.1% from the same period a year earlier, the producer said.

Offset inks struggled as sales for publishing and advertising leaflets remained stagnant, while sales of black news inks were down, owing to a continuing decline in newspaper print runs and page counts, the company said.

DIC expected its net profits for the full year ending 31 March 2009 to decrease 45.2% to Y17bn and net sales to be 4% down to Y1,035bn, it said.

DIC was formerly known as Dainippon Ink and Chemicals.
