SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Styrindo Mono Indonesia (SMI) plans to shut its 250,000 tonne/year No 2 styrene monomer (SM) unit for a scheduled catalyst change, a company source said on Thursday.

The unit, located in Merak, is expected to be taken offline in the first half of December for more than 30 days, he added.

The company also operates a 100,000 tonne/year No 1 unit at the same location, which was idled in October due to poor economics. The unit underwent a revamp in July this year to enable it to use natural gas as fuel.

The company may not restart the No 1 unit during the shutdown of its No 2 plant due to flagging styrene monomer demand in Asia, the source said.
