HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US exports of acetic acid in September totalled 53,228 tonnes, up by almost 12% from 47,605 tonnes during the same month last year, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Thursday.
But September exports were down 45% from 96,861 tonnes in August this year, the USITC said.
Mexico and Belgium were the top export destinations in August, accounting for a collective 40,103 tonnes - or 75% of total shipments.
US 2008 acetic acid exports increased by 22% through September this year compared with the same period of 2007, reflecting a declining domestic market and a sluggish US economy, according to market sources.
US Gulf coast export FOB (free on board) prices were $700-800/tonne (€560-640/tonne) over the past month, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
Major US acetic acid sellers include BP, Celanese and Eastman Chemical.
