HOUSTON (ICIS news)--About 200 workers at Celanese's Pampa plant in Texas have been told they will be laid off beginning on 31 December, a state official said on Thursday.

Celanese announced on Monday that it would close the plant on 4 January, with removal of finished product from the Pampa site to be completed by 1 March.

The Pampa plant produces a range of chemicals including 290,000 tonnes/year of acetic acid and 145,000 tonnes/year of acetic anhydride, according to Celanese.

The Pampa plant's new owner, Australian investment firm Babcock & Brown, has said it plans to use the site for an 800-megawatt, coal-fired power plant.
