US Aventine delays two ethanol refineries

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US ethanol producer Aventine Renewable Energy was delaying the opening of two ethanol refineries, the company said on Friday.

At its site in Aurora, Nebraska, Aventine is temporarily suspending construction, the company said.

The delay will likely last six months, the company said.

In addition, the company is extending the construction schedule of its refinery in Mount Vernon, Indiana, Aventine said. The plant will now open in the fourth quarter of 2009.

When Aventine completes the initial phases of the refineries, each will have a capacity of 113m gal/year (428m litres/year), the company said.

Aventine is delaying the projects to preserve liquidity at a time when ethanol markets are weak, the company said.

“We remain committed to the completion of these facilities and the communities in which they are located and look forward to the day that both of these facilities are producing ethanol," according to a statement by Ron Miller, CEO.
