RIO DE JANEIRO (ICIS news)--Mexichem is in talks to create a vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) joint venture (JV) in Colombia as part of plans to backward integrate its polyvinyl chloride (PVC) production, the chief executive of the Mexican producer said on Sunday.

Preliminary talks have commenced with Colombian state-owned petroleum company Ecopetrol to build a joint venture VCM plant in Cartagena, Colombia, Mexichem’s Ricardo Gutierrez said on the sidelines of the Latin American Petrochemical Association (APLA) annual meeting here.

Integrating the production is a key growth strategy for Mexichem, which has three main production chains: chlorine-vinyl, transformed products and fluorine.

“The problem with Mexichem is that we don’t have full integration,” said Gutierrez.

Ecopetrol would be a suitable partner for the production of VCM because it is considering a major expansion of its ethylene and derivatives production in Colombia.

Under the current project proposal, Ecopetrol would have sufficient ethylene available to supply the VCM plant.

The plant would consume 200,000 tonnes/year of ethylene to produce 400,000 tonnes/year of VCM, Gutierrez said.
