TOKYO (ICIS news)--Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding (MES) has received an order from refiner Cosmo Oil and the state-run Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co (Masdar) to build a solar power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Japanese engineering company said on Monday.

The plant, which is to be built this year in a special free trade zone adjacent to Abu Dhabi Airport, will collect data and study various issues for the construction of a future commercial solar power plant, MES said.

MES did not state when the unit would become operational or a timeframe for building the commercial facility.

The demonstration project would use a "beam-down" concentrated solar power system where sunlight is shone onto reflection mirrors laid out all over a field, which is collected by a central reflection mirror installed at the top of a tower.

The light is then re-reflected to a solar furnace on the ground in order to make a high-temperature liquid and generate power, MES said.

“Meanwhile, this demonstration plant aims [to have] electricity generation with lower cost than a conventional commercial concentrated solar-power system or a photovoltaic generation system in use,” MES added.
