Correction: In the ICIS news story headlined “Solutia to stop making interlayers at US plant” dated 18 November 2008, please read in the first paragraph … Michigan … instead of … New Jersey …. A corrected story follows.

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Solutia will no longer produce polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayers at its Trenton plant in Michigan, effective on 31 March, and will focus solely on the production of PVB resin, the company said on Tuesday.

The action will remove 30m square metres of Saflex PVB interlayers from the North American market, Solutia said in a press release, adding that its two other North American plants would continue to provide the material.

The action will impact 115 of the 187 employees at the plant, Solutia said.

The Trenton plant will continue to supply other Saflex plants operations with Butvar PVB resin, which is the key raw material used to make Saflex, Solutia said.

"Demand in Europe and Asia has grown faster than the rest of the world, resulting in excess North American capacity and necessitating this action,” said Luc De Temmerman, senior vice president of Solutia and president of Saflex.

“In the coming weeks, we will work to ensure our employees impacted by this event are treated fairly and to ensure our customers continue to receive the quality products they need."

Saflex PVB interlayers are used in laminated glass.
