Japan Oct PVC output falls 4.5%, VAM down 6.2%

TOKYO (ICIS news)--Japan produced 147,208 tonnes of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin in October, down 4.5% month on month, while vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) output was 6.2% lower than September at 195,945 tonnes, a local council said on Wednesday.

This was a 21.2% decrease from the same time a year before for PVC, while VAM was 28.8%, the country’s Vinyl Environmental Council (VEC) added.

Domestic shipments of PVC totalled 102,807 tonnes, up 2.6% month on month and down 11.8% year on year, while exports increased 6.7% from September and decreased 41% from the year-ago period, according to the council.

Among domestic shipment of VCM, which amounted to 151,489 tonnes, a 5.3% decrease from September and down 21% from the previous year, 149,000 tonnes were used for PVC production, the council said.

This was a 4.9% decrease from the month before and a 20.6% decline from October 2007, VEC added.

Exports of VCM totalled 50,326 tonnes in October, a 46.2% increase from September and a 17.3% decrease from the previous year, the council added.
