Ming Dih shuts Bangkok EPS amid anti-govt protest

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Taiwan’s Ming Dih Group shut its expandable polystyrene (EPS) plant in Bangkok this week amid escalating anti-government demonstrations in Thailand's capital, said a company source on Wednesday.

 

The 30,000 tonne/year unit was taken offline early this week when Bangkok’s international airport was temporarily shut as precaution for potential violence, the source said.

 

A grenade explosion rocked the Suvarnabhumi airport this morning, injuring three, according to Thai media reports. Protesters moved to the airport to prevent Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat from returning home today after meeting with leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Lima, Peru based on local reports.

 

 The start up of the Ming Dih plant is currently unknown and is dependent on when the situation in Bangkok would improve, said the source.

 

Ming Dih also operates a 166,000 tonne/year plant in Taiwan and a 100,000 tonne/year unit in Zhongshan, southern China.
