Flint Hills to idle Texas olefins cracker

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Flint Hills Resources (FHR) began to shut down its Port Arthur olefins cracker in Texas and will idle the unit for an unspecified length of time, a company official said on Monday.

FHR announced the shutdown on the weekend in a filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

The company did not elaborate on the reasons for the shutdown.

The company has 621,000 tonnes/year of ethylene capacity in Port Arthur, according to ICIS plants and projects.

The shutdown is the second stoppage announced by FHR since November.

The company on 6 November said it would permanently close its Odessa olefins cracker in Texas in the first half of 2009.

FHR’s ethylene capacity in Odessa is 348,000 tonnes/year.
