HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US major Dow Chemical will hold a press conference to announce possible layoffs at the chemical producer's Freeport complex in Texas, a company spokesperson said on Wednesday.
There were no details, though a Houston Fox News television report said Dow had released a statement saying it would "explain the job losses" at the complex.
The report said Dow had announced it would reduce the numbers of contract workers on site "substantially" by assigning Dow employees to positions currently held by the contract workers.
More than 4,000 contract workers are currently employed at the plant, according to the report.
The statement, according to the TV report, said the layoffs will occur in stages from 15 December through 5 January.
A press conference on the layoffs was to begin at 15:30 hours Houston time (21:30 GMT), according to the Dow spokesperson.
Products made at the plant include ethylene, acetone and benzene.
