(Adds details on MEG lines affected and reason for shutdown)

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Lotte Daesan Petrochemical has shut down production at its 1m tonne/year cracker in Daesan, late last night, a company source said on Monday.

The source did not disclose the reason for the shutdown of Korea’s largest cracker but added that the problem was “quite serious” and the company’s engineers “were still checking”.

He added that the duration of the shutdown was not known and the supply of feedstock ethylene to Lotte’s downstream monoethylene glycol (MEG) lines was like to be reduced.

A source close to the company told ICIS news exclusively that the shutdown was likely due a shortage of power supply to the cracker.

Key cracker operators in Asia including Taiwan’s Formosa Petrochemical Corp and South Korea’s Yeochun Naphtha Cracking Center (YNCC).
