NEW DELHI (ICIS news)--India’s SRF Limited has suspended operations at its integrated nylon tyre cord fabric (NTCF) plant at Manali, near Chennai, in Tamilnadu state, due to power outages and oversupply worries, the company said on Friday.

In a brief filed with stock exchanges, SRF said: “The operations of the polymerization and spinning lines” have been suspended due to “power shortage and to avoid unnecessary inventory build-up”.

A company official would not disclose the capacity of the plant or any other related information.

An analyst had said that the company earlier this year commissioned 14 mega watt (MW) wind turbines to generate power for the Manali plant.

The company is India’s largest NTCF producer, with a total capacity of 52,880 tonnes/year split between plants at three locations.

SRF suffered a setback in NTCF production for about 40 days at its facility at Gummidipoondi, in Tamilnadu state, due to a labour strike from September to October.

SRF is to commission India’s first polyester industrial yarn (PIY) plant at Gummidipoondi in early 2009.

The 22,500 tonne/year plant is being set up in technical collaboration with Japan’s Toray Industries at a cost of rupees (Rs) 2.5bn ($51.9m).

The company also produces polyester films, choloromethanes and flourochemicals.

The company’s plants are located at different sites across India, as well in the United Arab Emirates, Thailand and South Africa.
