LONDON  (ICIS news)--European chlorine production fell by 20.8% in November, compared with October figures, according to industry association Euro-Chlor.

November 2008 production stood at 687,930 tonnes, compared with 880,075 tonnes in the same month in 2007, a 21.8% decrease.

The news will come as little surprise to industry participants, as European chlorine production was estimated to be running at reduced rates of 20-50% as a result of poor demand for key derivative polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Average daily chlorine output dropped by 18.2% against the previous month, from 28,034 to 22,931, which, according to Euro-Chlor, was the lowest daily output recorded for the past 12 years.

Caustic soda also saw reduced stocks in November, down for the third successive month, according to the release.

Caustic soda stocks were recorded to be 4.5% lower than October, and exports were at a record monthly low of 28,395 tonnes.

The average monthly export for the previous 10 months was at 53,404 tonnes per month, a total decrease of 46.8% for November.

A producer was quick to highlight that exports had been in line with lower domestic demand.
