Oman’s Octal to start new PET next week

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Oman’s Octal Petrochemicals would start up its new 1,000 tonne/day polyethylene terephthlate (PET) plant next week after about five months’ delay, a company source said on Wednesday.

“Tests were being carried out at the site in the past few months,” said the source. The PET plant in Salalah was scheduled to start up July this year.

The PET plant, which would be Oman’s first, could produce up to 360,000 tonnes/year of bottle-grade material intended for captive use as the plant is integrated with Octal’s blow-moulding bottle unit.

Octal has plans to eventually lift its PET capacity in Salalah to 800,000 tonnes/year in May 2010.
