Flint Hills begins to shut down Texas olefins plant

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Flint Hills Resources (FHR) has begun to shut down its Odessa olefins plant in Texas in preparation for the permanent decommissioning of the site, a company spokesperson confirmed on Monday.

The shutdown process at the 348,000 tonne/year cracker began on 3 January, according to a filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

Most of the olefins plant will be taken off line except for some systems needed to operate the polymer units until those are permanently shutdown, FHR said in the filing.

The company announced the decommissioning of Odessa in early November, saying it planned to focus on polymer production elsewhere.

FHR produces polypropylene (PP), low density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) at the site, according ICIS Plants and Projects
